Zanu
PF Senator threatens school headmaster with dismissal
Combined Harare
Residents Association (CHRA)
November 14, 2006
Residents of Kambuzuma
received a swift backlash from Sabina Thembani, the Zanu PF Senator
for Mufakose-Rugare-Kambuzuma after they snubbed her meeting held
at the Kambuzuma 2 Community Hall on Sunday afternoon.
The residents'
meeting, held at Rukudzo Primary School, was jointly organised and
hosted by the Combined Harare Residents' Association (CHRA)
in liaison with the Kambuzuma Residents Committee, a CHRA branch.
The objective of the
meeting was to educate Kambuzuma residents on budget-formulation
processes. It was necessitated by the fact that soon the City of
Harare will announce its 2007 City Budget.
The Kambuzuma public
meeting was initially scheduled to take place at the Kambuzuma 2
Community Hall at 2pm. However, a graduation ceremony due on the
same day at the same time forced residents to liaise with the adjacent
Rukudzo Primary School to be allowed to host their meeting, and
their request was granted.
They also informed the
police who gave them the nod. However, on the day of the meeting,
about 400 residents turned up at Rukudzo Primary School to share
their experiences on the City budget and make their own reflections.
They came early for the
public meeting and waited outside the school gate chatting.
At the community hall,
Senator Thembani, who had been invited as a guest speaker at the
pre-school graduation ceremony, only attracted less than 10 residents,
most of them unemployed Zanu PF youths and she was livid.
She immediately summoned
the school headmaster and lectured him on the dangers of defying
her orders. She ordered the headmaster to tell the residents to
disperse within the 'next 10 minutes' or 'he will
loose his job'.
The headmaster obligingly
told the gathered people to immediately disperse. The meeting ended
before it had even started.
CHRA remains
committed to holding as many public meetings as possible to educate
residents on the city budget formulation processes.
