Demonstrations
are the way to go for CHRA
Combined Harare
Residents Association (CHRA)
September 13, 2006
The Combined
Harare Residents Association (CHRA) is increasingly becoming the
voice of the voiceless. Residents who had become powerless in the
face of tyranny are becoming more involved in CHRA activities.
They are demanding
to be heard. They are demanding back their stolen democratic space.
As the struggle for a total return to democratic values continues,
residents in various suburbs have held public meetings at which
they have resolved to carry out massive demonstrations against their
respective District Officers.
To buttress
their positions, residents of Budiriro, Dzivarasekwa and Glen View
have offloaded raw sewerage and garbage at their district offices,
demanding that mayoral and council elections be held.
The demonstrators
also demanded the immediate removal from office of the illegal commission
running the affairs of the capital.
Most importantly,
the residents of Harare are concerned with the collapse in service
provision, the reluctance by the government to announce dates for
Harare elections and the continued abuse of municipal resources
by the illegal commissioners.
As part of their
broad strategy to enhance civic participation by the residents of
Harare, CHRA has been encouraging residents to protest the intended
sell of a council house to Sekesai Makwavarara, the Chairperson
of the illegal commission running the affairs of the capital.
A total of 600
residents from across Harare officially lodged their objections
to the intended sale of the municipal property at Number 19 Nigel’s
Lane, Highlands.
CHRA commends
the resilience of the membership in the face of adversity. There
have been attempts to discourage them from pursuing their objective
of reclaiming the city from the bond of illegality. Residents must
remain united and claim victory as a grouping than as individuals.
