Greedy
taking root in City of Harare
Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
April 12, 2006
CHRA
is worried by the new trend that is growing within the City of Harare.
New acquisitions are appearing in the media like nobody’s business.
Throughout
this week we have received several complaints from residents who
are angry at the way the illegal commission is discharging its duties.
First, they are an illegal entity, being propped up by Minister
Ignatius Chombo. Secondly, they are taking insensitive decisions
on behalf of Harare residents.
The
municipality only acts when there is a public outcry, but only as
an appeasement exercise. Last week they went about giving an impression
that they were doing something about the crisis of service delivery
in the capital.
The
truth is that there is nothing going on and the sooner they realise
that Harare residents are not fools the better. The illegal commission
running the affairs of Harare should begin to appreciate that they
are illegally in charge of the capital.
CHRA
monitors service delivery in Harare and keep residents informed.
We demand service delivery in all parts of Harare and would ask
the municipality to start acting on issues of concern to residents.
Residents
need a committed Municipality that listens to their concerns. Refuse
must be collected. Burst sewer and water pipes must be repaired
as a matter of urgency. Grass cutting along our roads must be expedited
to save our children from avoidable muggings and unnecessary road
accidents.
Service
delivery must remain top of the priority list. Residents are developing
coping mechanisms that will ensure the City of Harare does not forget
its duties and responsibilities towards residents.
Residents
need to ask the following questions and act to protect their interests;
- Does DStv
help in terms of refuse collection?
- Does Makwavarara
deserve to be in the mayoral mansion?
- Should we
pay our rates for them for their greediness?
Ask yourself
what role you are playing in your community to correct the situation
in Harare
