Residents
stage demonstration http://www.chra.co.zw/viewinfo.cfm?id=72&linkid=3&siteid=1 In a move that confirmed growing dissatisfaction with service delivery in Harare, some residents in Tafara mobbed the local District Office to protest over the lack of water and general decay in service delivery. It is alleged that ordinary residents converged at the Tafara District Office and only dispersed at around mid-day. A Tafara resident confirmed that his neighbour had been briefly held by police in connection with the demonstration. " the police picked him up just as we were dispersing" he said, adding that the police details took him into a patrol car at the scene. " I could make out 15 police details. He (the neighbour) was beaten in the police vehicle and challenged by the police for participating in the demonstration." The Association has not established whether the resident has received any treatment, however, the resident was released after an hour and is back home. The chairperson of Mabcuku/ Tafara residents Association, Mr. T.V. Madeko, was picked up by police for questioning during the day. He has not been arrested, but the police have requested he be present for questioning at 0800hrs tomorrow at Harare Central Police Station. Combined Harare Residents Association is concerned with the growing decay in service delivery in Harare, particularly in Mabvuku and Tafara. Residents have gone without water for weeks amid reports that the Harare City Council will rectify the situation. Council efforts have turned into token promises as residents have again gone without water for the past two days.
