Harare City Junior Council elected a new executive committee at a ceremony at Town House last week.

Reginald Mhuru is the new junior mayor heading an executive committee made up of Bingani Zhanje as his deputy, Fadzai Takarinda as the town clerk and Honour Mutete as treasurer.

Other members of the committee are Kudakwashe Kundishora (public relations officer), Patience Chibaya (committee clerk) and Daniel Chigwada (project co-ordinator).

Sixty-six councillors make up the junior council from which the executive committee was elected.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, guest of honour Harare acting mayor Ms Sekesayi Makwavarara said the junior council should mould and prepare young people for the challenges of the senior council.

Ms Makwavarara emphasised the need for the new council to maintain discipline and guard against abuse of council privileges.

Parents, she said, should help mould children into people who can face and overcome life’s challenges such HIV and Aids, drug abuse and unemployment.

She said the new council should work to assist vulnerable members of the society.

Mhuru, the incoming junior mayor, said his immediate challenge was to unite all pupils regardless of their school background.

"I want to work on improving the inter-relationship between pupils of the so-called ‘A’ schools and their counterparts from high-density schools," he said.

He noted that some pupils from schools in the city centre looked down upon those from less affluent schools.

Public relations officer Kundishora said she expected the representation of pupils from schools located in high-density areas to improve.

The councillors are drawn from a number of schools around Harare such as Prince Edward School, Phoenix College, Hatfield High and Ellis Robin.
