CHRA rejects attempts to intimidate Mayor of Harare
Combined Harare Residents' Association (CHRA)
April 08, 2003

We have been reliably informed that ZANUPF members intend staging demonstrations around Harare tomorrow Wednesday 9th April to protest at what they see as the failure of the Mayor to perform. While we respect the rights of all citizens to engage in peaceful public protest (unlike the Mugabe regime and its supporters), we reject any attempt by the ZANUPF minority to bully and intimidate our elected Mayor and Councillors who are working under an openly hostile regime that has blatantly undermined their ability to carry out the mandate of the residents so clearly given in March 2002. Our investigations have shown that the demonstration orchestrated by ZANUPF last month was stage-managed: many participants if not the majority were forced by thugs to attend.

The partisan behaviour of the police is also unacceptable; we trust that the freedom given to the ruling party’s members to demonstrate will also be extended to all residents who wish to express their views.

CHRA calls upon all residents to oppose yet another attempt to stifle the Mayor and our council.

Attend the Wednesday lunchtime meetings at Town Hall with Mayor Mudzuri and demonstrate your support.
