Police's
disruption of meeting and arrest of Councillor uncalled for
Combined Harare
Residents' Association (CHRA)
January
29, 2003
Combined Harare
Residents Association is appalled by the recent police decision
to bar residents from meeting the Executive Mayor Eng. Elias Mudzuri
to discuss the current water situation. The disruption of the meeting
came without warning and resulted in a lot of chaos and inconvinience
on the part of residents. We feel insulted by government's persistent
attempts to quell any form of discourse with the present council
without offering an alternative. The harassment of Residents by
the police officers who were at Townhouse, and the subsequent arrest
of the councillor for ward 7 Cllr.
Michael Laban should be deplored with all the contempt that
it deserves.
Residents and
Ratepayers of Harare want to know the truth about the water situation.
Continued intimidation by the Police, and denial of adequate avenues
for discussion in this regard will only work to deepen the saga.
We condemn the stifling of Council's endeavours, and demand that
it be accorded the platform to explain itself to the electorate.
The Police, Government and the City of Harare have an obligation
to serve the interests of the people. Continued harassment of ordinary
residents, disruption of business in the City, and the arrest and
intimidation of our spokespersons is a breach of the trust endowed
in the authorities. As residents we will not sit idly by and watch.
Enough is enough.
