ZESN condemns the perpetration of violence in the run up to the Kuwadzana by-election
Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN)
January 16, 2003

In solidarity with the Combined Harare Residents Association, Zimbabwe Election Support Network condemns the beating and subsequent arrest of Combined Harare Residents Association staff in Kuwadzana on the 14th of January 2002.

The militia beat the association's Chief Executive and members of staff when they had visited the constituency as their core business calls for them to visit residents to discuss the pending by-election. Such unwarranted repression of citizens' democratic right to movement and to gather information is a negation of the basic fundamental rights.

The perpetration of violence during the run up to an election is particularly undesirable as it affects the result of the election and negates the notion of free and fair elections, an important facet of democracy for which we contrive.
