Public
hearings on the 2013 National Budget
Southern African Parliamentary Support Trust
October 11, 2012
The Budget,
Finance and Investment Promotion Portfolio Committee will be conducting
countrywide public consultations on the 2013 National Budget beginning
on Monday 15 October 2012 as shown in the schedule below. This is
line with the provisions of the Public Finance Management Act, which
enjoins, Parliament, through the Budget, Finance and Investment
Promotion Portfolio Committee, to consult the public on key priorities
for the national budget.
This process is very
important as it allows the wider spectrum of society; citizens and
all interested stakeholders to shape key national priorities for
the year 2013. Public views gathered in this process will be compiled
into a report whose recommendations will be submitted to the Ministry
of Finance for consideration as part of the process of crafting
the 2013 National Budget. Developments over the last two years when
this process has been implemented are very encouraging. The Budget,
Finance and Investment Promotion Portfolio Committee and the Ministry
of Finance have developed a good working rapport to the extent that
most of the Committee’s recommendations have seriously been
considered and taken on board.
The Budget, Finance and
Investment Promotion Portfolio Committee will also table a report
in the House of Assembly during the 2013 National Budget debate.
This report will set the tone and help the House to debate from
an informed position.
In undertaking this exercise,
the Budget, Finance and Investment Promotion Portfolio Committee
will be split into two terms and will conduct public hearings in
the following areas on dates indicated in the schedule below;
