Official launch of Parliament of Zimbabwe's strategic plan

Parliament of Zimbabwe launched its 5-year Institutional Strategic Plan (2011 – 2015) yesterday at a colourful ceremony at the Rainbow Towers Hotel in Harare. The Southern African Parliamentary Support Trust (SAPST) and the Zimbabwe Institute (ZI) provided technical and financial support to Parliament of Zimbabwe for the crafting of the strategic plan. The official launch of the Institutional Strategic Plan yesterday was facilitated and funded by SAPST.

In his keynote address, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Lovemore Moyo, said the launch of the strategic plan was an historic occasion which marked a milestone of Parliament of Zimbabwe’s reform agenda. He expressed gratitude to parliament’s development partners, namely; SAPST and ZI for mobilizing resources for the development of parliament’s strategic plan as well as providing technical assistance towards the crafting of the document. SAPST received funding for this particular project from the Royal Netherlands Embassy and USAID. Thus the Speaker also extended special gratitude and appreciation for the financial support that Parliament of Zimbabwe was receiving from such international donors as the Royal Netherlands Embassy, USAID and DFID among others. The Speaker also thanked parliament’s presiding officers and management for working tirelessly as a team in crafting the strategic plan.

Hon. Moyo noted that the launch of the Institutional Strategic Plan should not be treated as an end in itself but the beginning of the process. He pledged the support of the presiding officers in ensuring the implementation of the strategic plan.

SAPST and ZI pledged their continued support for the implementation of Parliament of Zimbabwe’s Institutional Strategic Plan, which they hoped would assist to strengthen Parliament’s constitutional role towards democratic governance and hence serve the needs and aspirations of all citizens. Thus, they urged Parliament of Zimbabwe to guard its constitutional mandate jealously and ensure that its role was not undermined by the Executive.
