The Portfolio Committee on Mines, Energy and Power Development will be conducting a fact-finding visit to Chiadzwa Diamond Mining Fields as well as public hearings in the affected communities as part of its oversight function, starting on Wednesday 28 March 2012. The main objective of the visit to Chiadzwa Diamond Mining Fields is for the Committee to assess for itself progress on the ground and to hear views of the affected people in the Marange community who were displaced by the mining operations.

The fact-finding mission comes after several failed attempts last year, where the visits were aborted at the last minute due to failure of meeting stringent bureaucratic procedures. It is hoped that this time, the Committee has done its homework properly to ensure that all the necessary requirements for its visit have been met.

The Committee will kick-start its busy schedule by touring production plants of all the companies mining at Chiadzwa and will have the opportunity to pose questions to representatives of the mining companies. The Committee will also meet the Governor of Manicaland Province, Hon. Christopher Mushowe and other government departments involved in the relocation programme of the affected Marange families.

The Committee will also have a separate meeting with the Mutare business community on Friday 30 March 2012.

On Thursday 29 March, the Committee will conduct a public hearing at Zengeni Shopping Centre at 1400 hours to gather the views of the community about the mining operations in the area. A second public hearing will be conducted the following day at 1400 hours to hear the views of the people who were relocated from Chiadzwa to Transau Farm.

The Committee will wind off its programme on Friday 30 March 2012 with a visit to Transsau Farm where the affected families have been relocated.

The Committee is chaired by Hon. Edward Chindori-Chininga (ZANU PF Guruve South). Mrs. C. Mataruka is the Committee Clerk and she will be accompanying the Committee.
