Proclamation
6 of 2008 - Date for by-elections - Statutory Instrument 79 of 2008
HIS EXCELLENCY
THE HONOURABLE ROBERT GABRIEL MUGABE, G.C.Z.M., President of Zimbabwe
and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces of Zimbabwe.
WHEREAS, it
is provided by section 39(2)(b) of the Electoral
Act [Chapter 2:13] that within a specified period after a declaration
has been made by the Chief Elections Officer that a duly nominated
candidate for election for a constituency died before the poll commenced;
AND WHEREAS
by the Chief Elections Officer has declared that the following candidates
for election for the following House of Assembly constituencies
died before the poll commenced, namely—
(a) Glory Joseph
Tlou Makwati, who was nominated as a candidate for the Gwanda South
House of Assembly constituency;
(b) Milfdord
Gwetu, who was nominated as a candidate for the Pelandaba-Mpopoma
constituency;
(c) Mate Abednigo
Malinga, who was nominated as a candidate for the Redcliff House
of Assembly constituency;
NOW, THEREFORE,
under and by virtue of the powers vested in the President as aforesaid,
I do, by this my proclamation—
(a) order a
new election for the House of Assembly constituencies of Gwanda
South, Pelandaba-Mpopoma and Redcliff;
(b) fix Friday,
the 30th May, 2008, and the Magistrates Court, Fifth Avenue, Gwanda,
as the date on which and the place at which a nomination court shall
sit in terms of section 46 of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13] to
receive nominations of candidates for the House of Assembly constituency
of Gwanda South;
(c) fix Friday,
the 30th May, 2008, and the Magistrates Court, Tredgold Building,
Leopold Takawira Avenue, Bulawayo, as the date on which and the
place at which a nomination court shall sit in terms of section
46 of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13] to receive nominations of
candidates for the House of Assembly constituency of Pelandaba-Mpopoma;
(d) fix Friday,
the 30th May, 2008, and the Magistrates Court, Main Street, Gweru,
as the date on which and the place at which a nomination court shall
sit in terms of section 46 of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13] to
receive nominations of candidates for the House of Assembly constituency
of Redcliff;
(e) fix Friday,
the 27th June, 2008, as the day on which a poll shall be taken if
a poll becomes necessary in terms of section 46(17)(c) of the Electoral
Act [Chapter 2:13] for the election of a such member of Parliament
for any of the foregoing House of Assembly constituencies;
Given under
my hand and the Public Seal of Zimbabwe at Harare, this thirteenth
day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand and eight.
