Death
of Justice Washington Sansole
Leonard Kapungu, Centre for Peace Initiatives
in Africa (CPIA)
June 12, 2009
It is with immense shock
and sadness that the Centre for Peace Initiatives in Africa (CPIA)
has learned of the death of Justice Washington Sansole, on Monday
8 June 2009.
Justice Sansole has been
a member of the CPIA Board of Trustees since 2004, Group of Eminent
Persons since 2006, Social Cohesion Committee since 2007 and was
Chairman of the General Emmanuel Erskine Research and Documentation
Centre (GERDC) Board. In addition to playing an important part in
ensuring that the Centre is in line with its core mandate of conflict
prevention, management and resolution in Zimbabwe and the rest of
Africa through the above Advisory groups, he has been a leading
figure in the implementation of CPIA's Reconciliation, Social
Cohesions and Transitional Justice Programme.
The CPIA Executive Director,
the International and Local Board of Trustees, the Eminent Persons
Group, Church Leaders Group, Social Cohesion Committee and the Staff
of CPIA pay tribute to "a highly respected prominent advocate
of integrity who contributed tremendously to various endeavors on
democracy throughout the country".
Enjoying a national reputation
as an arbitrator in industrial disputes in various companies and
law expert, he was deeply committed to CPIA and its vision for Zimbabwe
and the rest of Africa.
Justice Sansole will
be fondly and greatly missed by CPIA. Our thoughts are with his
wife, children and other family members, as well as the staff of
the Sansole and Senda Legal Practitioners.
