The International
Bar Association (IBA), in partnership with SW Radio Africa
has begun broadcasting a brand new programme entitled In the
Balance. The programme will air weekly, each Wednesday between
1815 and 1830 (Zimbabwe Time), and will provide an arena for serious
debate on issues confronting Zimbabweans today.
In the
Balance is the IBA's first venture into radio broadcasting
and is hosted by the IBA's Gugulethu Moyo, Zimbabwean lawyer, and
former legal adviser to the banned Daily News. She will be
joined each week by some of the world's leading lawyers and human
rights advocates, who will discuss human rights issues affecting
the citizens of Zimbabwe.
Gerry Jackson,
SW Radio Africa's Station Manager said, 'SW Radio Africa is extremely
pleased to be associated with the IBA in bringing together some
of the world's leading legal voices to share extensive insights.
Zimbabweans are so in need of this kind of information and we feel
certain the collaboration will do much to help influence our country's
move towards becoming a truly democratic society.'
Ms Moyo's guest
for the inaugural airing of In the Balance was Judge
Ismail Hussain, Commissioner of South Africa's Independent Electoral
Commission. With a general election due to take place in Zimbabwe
at the end of March, the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing
Democratic Elections formed the topic of discussion. The debate
focused on the importance of free and fair elections and the complete
adherence to the SADC regional standards; establishing true democracy;
and the necessity of a stable political environment to attract investment
and create a thriving economy.
IBA Executive
Director, Mark Ellis says, 'This radio programme is an important
milestone for the IBA and further shows our commitment to defending
a just rule of law whenever it is threatened. In the run- up to
Zimbabwe's elections, In the Balance will bring to listeners
essential analysis, informed debate and a valuable international
perspective on the impending polls. We are delighted to be partnering
SW Radio Africa in this venture.'
The programme
can be listened to live on line at http://www.swradioafrica.com,
or on radio frequency 6145KHZ in the 49m band. In addition, the
Archives section of the SW Radio Africa website will keep
programmes for a period of time.
Programmes
will also be available for downloading from the IBA website the
day after transmission at: http://www.ibanet.org/humanrights/Radio_Programme_In_the_Balance.cfm
