ZISCO workers situation dire
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
November 14, 2012

The condition that workers at ZISCO in Redcliff find themselves in is becoming direr by the day as government and Essar Africa dither on the pact meant to turnaround the fortunes of the entity as workers have now been informed that they are being placed on forced and unpaid one a half months leave. Currently it remains unclear under whose employ the workers are, whether it is government or Essar Africa.

The humanitarian crisis that these workers and their families have been thrown into is calamitous with more than 30 workers having died so far as a direct result of this government-Essar Africa fiasco where workers have not been paid their salaries for 7 months now. Workers are unable to put meals on their tables, cover their medical expenses, or pay school fees for their children. The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions is alarmed as the situation continues to deteriorate despite reports in September that Cabinet had approved the Essar Africa-Zisco accord.

Thousands of jobs have been on the line for the past few years as ZISCO failed to perform and the town of Redcliff was slowly dying while government dithered on the matter. The ZCTU is concerned that the welfare of these workers is not being prioritised. Political interference that brought ZISCO to its knees continues unabated.

ZCTU demands that government acts on the matter and that for once government puts the interest of these workers and their families first. So much seems to be happening behind the scenes between various government Ministers and Essar Africa but all this has failed to benefit the workers. ZCTU together with the workers' representatives, the Zimbabwe Metal & Allied Workers Union is engaging all the stakeholders involved to try and save the situation.
