ZCTU demands presidential elections
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
May 15, 2010

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) General Council on 15 May 2010 noted with concern lack of progress in the economic and political spheres since the inception of Government of National Unity (GNU).

GNU has been characterized by impasses, name-calling and mistrust among the political parties while the majority of Zimbabweans continue to suffer. The envisaged new Constitutional making process has been fraught with anomalies and as predicted by ZCTU, has failed to take off as a result of squabbling. While it would have been ideal to have a new people driven constitution in place before elections, this is not currently possible.
Mindful of the above, the General Council meeting therefore resolved;

  • That there be a Constitutional Amendment number 20 that specifically deals with elections
  • That the elections be presidential elections only, Local authorities, senate and parliamentarians should not be affected since there were no contentions for same.
  • That Presidential elections be monitored by Southern African Development Community, African Union and the international community
