Police pick ZCTU officials in Mutare
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
March 02, 2010

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) condemns the continued harassment of trade unionists my law enforcement agents.

Gilbert Marembo, Tenyson Muchefa and Adrien Mugwanju, ZCTU staff members, have been picked up today while conducting a civic education workshop at Montview Hotel in Mutare. The police details, numbering 15, stormed the venue of the workshop demanding that participants disperse.

They are being accused of not notifying the police beforehand about the workshop and chasing out some police officers who entered into the workshop without invitation. This is despite several court rulings that trade unions do not need police clearance for conducting trade union business.

The trio are being questioned at Mutare Central Police Station. ZCTU, though Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, has dispatched lawyers to the police station.

The ZCTU demands that the three be released and be left to do their work without intervention of the police.
