  • Banditry charges against journalist should be dropped
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
    January 13, 2008

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions is disconcerted by a court's decision to charge freelance photojournalist Anderson Shadreck Manyere with alleged acts of banditry.

We believe that this is a senseless act by the State that is meant to be used as an intimidation tactic on opposition activists in the face of stalled all-inclusive government talks. Manyere, we believe, is an innocent journalist and should be allowed to do his work without being harassed by state security agents.

There has been a continued attack on journalists in the country and the trend is unnerving.

The ZCTU therefore, demands that "government" and state security agencies stop the harassment of media workers and instead ensure that they are left alone to discharge their duties without fear.

We also demand that government guarantees the safety of all journalists regardless of the media they work for as by working for a media house of their choice, journalists are merely practicing their Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Association.
