  • COSATU backs ZCTU on SADC deal
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU)
    November 11, 2008

The Congress of South African Trade Unions fully supports the statement by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) on the outcome of the extraordinary summit of the SADC Heads of State and Government.

The SADC leaders have failed dismally to find a settlement that reflects the democratic will of the people of Zimbabwe as reflected in the results of the 29 March elections. They are trying to maintain a defeated dictator in power in defiance of the popular will. It is an 'elite deal' that would never have worked. COSATU reaffirms its support for the creation of a transitional administration whose only function will be to organize new, genuinely free and fair elections.

COSATU extends its support to the ZCTU and the people of Zimbabwe and stands ready to act in solidarity with their struggle for democracy and human rights.
