ZCTU
denies calls for strike
Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
November 06, 2008
We would like to correct
a story that has been appearing on online news, and in particular,
Zimonline alleging that the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
has called for an indefinite strike by workers beginning next Tuesday
to press for the establishment of a transitional authority to draw
up a new Constitution for the country that will lead to free and
fair elections.
The ZCTU wants to put
it on record that it has NOT penciled any action for Tuesday 11
November 2008 and has never issued statements to that effect.
Although it is ZCTU's
position that only a Transitional Authority can help solve the country's
current political impasse, it has not resolved to take action to
effect same.
As a mass driven organisation,
the ZCTU can only take action after it has consulted its membership
and has been given the go ahead by the General Council, the highest
decision making body, to embark on such action. The ZCTU general
council has not met to make a decision on the date and type of action
to take. When the ZCTU decides to take any action workers will have
been consulted through the structures and not just through the Press.
