ZCTU
maintains that GNU is a subversion of the constitution
Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
September 16, 2008
The Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has been inundated by the press
that is seeking its position on the outcome of the agreement
between Zanu PF and the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) yesterday,
15 September 2008.
We would like to make it clear that the ZCTU position as stated
in the General Council communiqué of 12 July 2008 was clear
that it would not accept a flawed process. The General Council clearly
resolved that:
"A Government of National Unity is a subversion of our National
Constitution
and only a Transitional Authority should be put in place with a
mandate to take Zimbabwe to fresh, free and fair elections that
will hopefully not be disputed by the parties".
The ZCTU General Council will meet on Saturday 20 September 2008
and unless it decides to shift from that position, our position
of 12 July still stands.
It is quite disturbing that the press has been flooding the ZCTU
on the issue of the outcome of the negotiations, yet during the
whole process, they ignored the position of the ZCTU.
We cannot afford to continue to be the cannon fodder for people
who have their own agendas.
