Strikes and Protests 2007/8 - Students
Arrest
and detention of ZINASU leadership
Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions
January 19, 2007
The Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions is disturbed and worried by the arrests
of Zimbabwe National
Student's Union leadership by police and their subsequent
detention at Mzilikazi police station.
The ZINASU president,
Promise Mkwananzi was arbitrarily arrested by state agents at United
College of Education during the launch of the campaign. He was arrested
alongside nine other members of ZINASU.
The Zimbabwean
government, through the police and army, has become paranoid as
evidenced by the widespread arrests, detention and torture of innocent
citizens.
The students
were on a mission to launch the campaign 'Save Our Education, Save
Our Future' in Bulawayo and it boggles the mind why they were arrested.
They have a right to assembly and discuss matters that affect the
education system in Zimbabwe.
The campaign
also comes against a backdrop of astronomical fees being charged
in all tertiary institutions in Zimbabwe. There is nothing sinister
about the launch of such a campaign as it is a just cause meant
to find ways of saving the Zimbabwe education system.
We demand that
the student leaders be freed immediately as their continued detention
is a clear case of human rights abuses.
