Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
    October 03, 2006

A Harare magistrate today postponed the trial of 31 ZCTU activists to 17 October 2006. The activists were arrested on 13 September 2006 for taking part in the ZCTU organised mass action.

The postponment was at the request of the ZCTU lawyer who said those injured were not yet fit to stand trial while others are still in pain and recuperating.

The magistrate also cancelled the initial ruling that those who were arrested report to the police every Friday.

Significantly, the magistrate ordered a fresh investigation, by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), into the brutal beatings and torture that took place at Matapi Police Station.

This was after the police produced narrative reports on what transpired instead of an investigation report. The police claimed that the ZCTU leadership were injured after they tried to jump out of the police truck and also that they used 'minimum' force after they resisted getting into cells. The police also claimed that their vehicles were damaged.

The magistrate noted that it was absurd for the policemen, who are alleged to have beaten the ZCTU leadership to investigate themselves. He ordered a different section of the police, the CID, to conduct the investigation.
