  • Prevention of workers demonstrations
    Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF)
    September 13, 2006

The Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF) strongly condemns the prevention of yet another peaceful march by security forces in Zimbabwe. Today, the peaceful protest called by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) was thwarted in a show of force by heavily armed police, the paramilitary and other agents of the state who cordoned off major roads.

ZEF is even more concerned that some ZCTU organizers of the marches have reportedly been kidnapped and their whereabouts unknown. The ZCTU wanted to embark on a peaceful protest against the high cost of living for workers as well as the unavailability of Antiretroviral drugs for HIV-AIDS sufferers.

Today's events emphasize more graphically the Zimbabwe dictatorship's contempt of all civilized norms, including the fundamental freedoms of assembly and expression. It is even more appalling that this repression follows on the heels of Monday's arrest of 107 women (one of whom was pregnant) and 5 babies, some of whom were denied food and legal representation while in custody.

ZEF categorically condemns these barbaric acts by the Zimbabwean government and calls upon pro-democracy groups inside and outside Zimbabwe to work together towards peaceful change. Lastly, we again draw the attention of the African Union, SADC and the international community to the suppression of fundamental freedoms as well as crimes against humanity occurring in Zimbabwe.
