The Assistant General
Secretary of the Commercial Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CWUZ) Edwell
Taringa was physically attacked yesterday after attending salary
negotiations on nbehalf of the Union.
Taringa was attacked
by a group of people who were accusing the negotiating team for
allegedly agreeing to a small percentage during the negotiations
with the employers at at the National Employment Council.
The group further alleged
that Taringa influence the NEC to bar the group from being part
of the negotiations.
Taringa and Rugube a
member of the negotiating tem were abducted and taken to St Andrews
house by the assailants who detained them for three hours while
also assaulted him. However no serious inuries were suffered but
the two are yet to see a doctor.
From there they were
then forced marched to the NEC offices and then to the Minister
of labour where they met the Labour Administrator who informed them
that a decesion on who should lead the union will be released soon.
The CWUZ has been besorted
with in house power struggles instigated by a faction led by one
Mushonga is challenging the current CWUZ leadership.
Mushonga and his faction
have been doing this regardless of a High court order barring them
from interferering with the Union's business.
The ZCTU condemns
this babarism and calls on the Police to make sure that the rule
of law is observed.
