ZCTU
Congress 2006
Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
May 24, 2006
The Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) would like to express its heart
felt thank you to all who attended the 6th ZCTU National Congress
on 19-20 May 2006.
The ZCTU gladly informs you that the Congress went on very well.
Your solidarity is very much appreciated and it gives us strength
to continue the worker'struggle.
The ZCTU would also like to condemn the deportations of five trade
unionists who wanted to attend the congress. This happened after
assurances from the Ministry of labour that no visitor will be deported.
Of particular concern is the refusal of entry for Cde Zwelinzima
Vavi the General Secretary of COSATU who was branded a 'sercurity
threat'. The ZCTU had tried to make an urgent Chamber application
at the High Court for an interdict at the High Court but we suspect
the process was deliberately slowed down to prevent Cde Vavi from
coming back to Zimbabwe. Cde Vavi had vowed to come back as quickly
as the interdict was issued.
The other colleagues deported were, Nina Mjoberg from Norway, Alice
Siame from Zambia, Jan Mahlangu, from South Africa and Wiep Basie
from Holland. No reasons were given for their deportation.
The following were chosen to lead the ZCTU for the next five years:
- Lovemore
Matombo - President (Communication and Allied Services Workers
Union)
- Lucia Matibenga
- 1st Vice President (Commercial Workers Union of Zimbabwe)
- Goerge Nkiwane
- 2nd Vice President (Zimbabwe Energy and Electricity Workers
Union)
- Thabitha
Khumalo - 3rd Vice President (Zimbabwe Education, Scientific and
Cultural Workers Union)
- Wellington
Chibebe - Secretary General
- Japhet Moyo
- 1st Assistant Secretary General (National Engineering Workers
Union)
- Gedion Shoko
- 2nd Assistant Secretary General (Zimbabwe Amalgamated Railwayman's
Union)
- Estavao Cumbulani
- Treasurer (Zimbabwe Tobacco Industries Workers Union)
The ZCTU would
communicate very soon the resolutions of the 6th national congress.
