ZCTU under investigation - Again!
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
January 14, 2006

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) started the year 2006 on a bad note after the Minister of Labour appointed a three person team to investigate the operations of the organisation.

The ZCTU opened for the new year on 3 January 2006 when the Minister of labour had already appointed the investigators and they have already started their work. They are based at the ZCTU offices and it is understood that the investigations will be carried for the next two months.

The appointment of the investigators follows a letter which was written to the Minister of Labour by the dismissed ZCTU Trustees who were dismissed by the General Council as well as four members of the General Counmcil who were suspended for bringing the name of the ZCTU into disrepute.

The brief of the investigators is to look at the ZCTU informal economy accounts and also look at whether other ZCTU transactions were done according to the ZCTU Financial Administration Handbook. The ZCTU has allowed the investigators to do their job and have availed them an office at the ZCTU premises.

This exercise comes after the Police invaded the ZCTU offices in Harare on 13 May 2005 and confiscated files of financial records. However nothing came out of the raid.

This exercise is not new to the ZCTU as this has happened to the previous leadership.

The ZCTU views this as deliberate interference from the Ministry of labour as they try very hard to find something to incriminate the current ZCTU leadership which will eventually lead to their ouster.
