  • 37 Mutare demonstrators out on $500 000 bail
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
    November 11, 2005

37 Workers who were still in custody in Mutare (four were released yesterday after paying a fine of $25 000) have been released on a $500 000 bail each. The ZCTU Regional Chairperson for Mutare was, however, released on $1.5 million bail. They are all expected to appear in court on 24 November 2005. They were all charged under the Public Order and Security Act (POSA). The 118 workers (including the ZCTU leaders, Wellington Chibebe and Lovemore Matombo) arrested in Harare are still in custody. Our lawyers are making urgent application to the High Court to have them released.

In Gweru and Bulawayo, all those arrested were released yesterday.
