suspends four affiliate union leaders

The
ZCTU General Council met today (13 August 2005) to deliberate the
resolutions of the 14 July leadership meeting which recommended
that affiliate unions write to the mother body declaring their position
as to wehter or not they associate themselves with the so called
seventeen disgruntled affiliate unions and also expressing their
position regarding the ZCTU and its current leadership
30 Affiliate unions responded in support of the ZCTU and its current
leadership and disassociating themselves from the so called disgruntled
affiliates. One only responded supporting the ZCTU and refused to
give its position regarding thre leadership. 4 did not bother to
respond at all.
The Special General Council meeting considered the evidence before
it, prefered charges against four members of the General Council
namely Nicholas Mazarura from the Zimbabwe Construction and Allied
Workers Union, Langton Mugeji from the Zimbabwe leather Shoe and
Allied Workers Union, Farai Makanda from the Transport and General
Workers Union and Joseph Midzi from the Associated Mine Workers
Union.
The above members were found guilty of bringing the name of the
ZCTU into disrepute and in terms of article 15.4.3 of the ZCTU constitution
which says "a member of th General Council shall lose such
position if such a member acts in a manner considered by the General
Council to be detrimental to the interests of the Congress"
The members were found guilty of going to the press attacking the
ZCTU leadership without authority, their aggressive nature which
led them to assaulting and disturbing Generalk Council meetings,
making public statement s to the press without approaval of the
General Council, hiring thugs to disrupt ZCTU activities, communication
with other international bodies like the ILO anbd the ICFTU without
approaval from the General Council, fraudulently using ZCTU letterheads
without authority, flighting press advertisements on ZCTU letterheads
without authority and the general disregard of the ZCTU leadership
and the Constitution.
The General Council therefore resolved that the four be suspended
from the General Council in terms article 15.8.2.5 of the ZCTU Constitution.
The General Council further resolved that the affiliates from which
the four members came from be advised of the decesion regarding
the suspensions and that they be also advised to second alternative
members to the ZCTU General Council.
