ZCTU statement on the NECF
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
June 28, 2005

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) would like to correct the misconception that it was snubbed from participating in the National Economic Consultative Forum (NECF) in a statement attributed to the NECF Spokesperson in the Daily Mirror of 28 June 2005.

The ZCTU did not expect an invitation and neither did it want to attend the forum as it pulled out in 1998. The decision to pull out was further reiterated in 2000 by the ZCTU General Council and the NECF is aware of that decision.

The reasons for pulling out were that the forum was just consultative and had no binding decisions or resolutions and therefore a mere talk shop.

The NECF was after all a brainchild of the ZCTU but has since been hijacked and diluted by people who do not have any constituencies and are answerable to themselves. Individuals are now invited to the forum instead of constituency driven organizations.

The ZCTU is better off attending the Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF) where binding decisions are made.
