Statement on deportation of Cosatu fact finding mission

THE National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) deplores the deportation of an innocent COSATU fact finding mission by the Zimbabwe government today.

What makes the action even more deplorable is that the Cosatu delegation had not committed any offence in Zimbabwe. May be their offence – as immigration authorities said yesterday – they must not have said they were going to meet "the NCA, Crisis Coalition and Zimbabwe Churches Coalition, and other quasi-opposition bodies."

The action by Cosatu must have cleared any doubts which South Africans especially President Thabo Mbeki on the nature of the regime. It is anti-democracy and is not open to any form of dissenting voices.

The action by Mugabe’s regime shows that there is no freedom of association and of assembly. The NCA laments the failure of the government to guarantee the workers rights of assembly.
