Trade Unionists arrested
Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
October 12, 2004
The Zimbabwe Congress
of Trade Unions (ZCTU) informs you that three trade unionists, Samuael
Khumalo, Ngulube and Munemo members of the Communication and Allied Services
Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CASWUZ) were arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic
of Police (ZRP) yesterday 11 October 2004 at around 11:00 am in Bulawayo,
no reasons for the arrest were given.
Ngulube and Munemo
are being held at the Bulawayo Central Police station while Samual Khumalo's
where abouts are unknown. The Lawyer of the Union is still making frantic
efforts to locate where Khumalo is being held but at the moment it is
still in vein. This is a worrying development since Khumalo has always
been a target of the Police and he was once arrested beaten and left for
dead last year during the ZCTU demonstrations against high levels of Taxation.
It seems the police
in Bulawayo are handling this strike in a heavy handed manner as both
the Police and the army are at the moment surrounding the premises of
the Bulawayo Post office and thge Post Office Savings Bank where a lot
of members of the Union work.
Workers at Zimbabwe
Post (ZIMOPOST) and Telone went on strike last week over management failure
to pay an arbitration award of a salary increament whicyh was awarded
in June.
Meanwhile the strike
is going ahead and the Union leaders will be meeting officials from the
Ministry of Labour on Thursday 14 October.
The ZCTU condemns
this action by the police as the strike by ZIMPOST and Telone workers
is legal.
The ZCTU will keep
you informed on any developments
