Update on ZCTU leaders' arrest
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
August 06, 2004

The ZCTU Information Department informs you that the 4 leaders who were arrested yesterday at a workshop in Gweru and charged under the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) spent the night in police custody, as the policeman in charge could not come up with a decision as to whether the four should be released or not.

It is clear that the police were acting on outside influence as they kept on passing the matter between the Law and order section and those officers who made the arrests. This type of action clearly shows that this was a deliberate arrest, which had nothing to do with the contravention of any laws in Zimbabwe. It is a way of curtailing ZCTU activities and of cause closing the democratic space which Zimbabweans have been calling for.

The ZCTU strongly condemns this type of unprofessionalism by the law enforcement agents and calls for the immediate release of the leaders.

Meanwhile, Gideon Shoko the General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Amalgamated Railwaymen's Union (ZARU) an affiliate of the ZCTU and eight other activists from Bulawayo will appear in court today on charges of demonstrating against high levels of taxation in November 18 2003. The nine were out on Z$5000 bail each.
