Chibebe picked up by police
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
August 05, 2004

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) Secretary-General, Wellington Chibebe was this morning picked up by police in Gweru for addressing a workers' meeting.

Collin Gwiyo, the ZCTU deputy secretary-general has confirmed that Mr. Chibebe who at the time of writing this statement was still in police custody, had been picked up at 10:00 am for addressing a labour meeting without police clearance. It is still not clear what charges are being preferred against the ZCTU leader.

Crisis Coalition condemns the arrest of Chibebe, which directly flies in the face of constitutionally guaranteed rights of freedom of association and expression.

The Coalition condemns the continued attack on the rights of workers and calls for the immediate, unconditional release of Chibebe. What is more disturbing is that there seems to be a well orchestrated attack on the ZCTU leader who barely a week ago, was forced to abandon another workers' meeting in Masvingo.
