ZCTU
press statement on the Tripartite Negotiating Forum
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
March 12, 2004
The Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is disappointed with the statement
by the Chairman of the National Economic Consultative Forum (NECF)
Nhlanhla Masuku's assertions that the ZCTU does not have the interest
of workers at heart and was responsible for the collapse of the
Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF).
It is unfortunate
that Nhlanhla Masuku is seeing things with one eye. For the record,
his allegations are misplaced and devoid of sincerity.
His claim that
only the government and employers are concerned about the plight
of workers is misguided. If that was the case, government would
have not unilaterally decided to announce minimum wages last year,
increase the price of fuel and also go ahead with its smear campaign
that these decisions were agreed to at the TNF while in actual fact,
negotiations were still in progress. It is this total disregard
of other stakeholders' input by government that made the ZCTU reconsider
its participation at the TNF.
If the Chairman
of the NECF believes that ZCTU can be used to lend credence to the
TNF and just be a rubber stumper of government decisions which are
not popular with workers then he is totally lost and needs to have
his head examined.
Actually, the
ZCTU wishes him good luck with his talk shop the NECF and would
also inform him that the ZCTU is not prepared to work with hypocrites
and people who want to use workers to their advantage.
The ZCTU remains
committed to tripartite dialogue and will only participate in the
TNF if government also commits itself to respect other social partners
and not use them to validate its decisions at the cost of their
integrity and compromise of the wishes of their constituencies.
