ZCTU Update on National Protest
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
November 24, 2003

In a victory against draconian legislation and Police brutality, the ZCTU leadership who were arrested on 18 November 2003 for protesting against the government had their charges withdrawn before plea on Friday 21 November 2003. This confirmed the earlier assertion by the ZCTU that it was holding a legal demonstration.

However the ZCTU leadership who participated in the 8th of April demonstrations must be in Court on 26 November 2003 to again answer some charges for demonstrating against the high cost of living and the violation of human and trade union rights and the reduction of tax.

The leaders were served with the summons soon after they had won their case after being held in custody for 3 days.

In another worrying development, 13 ZCTU activists who were arrested in Gweru are still wallowing in Police cells since Tuesday in very deplorable conditions. They were even not allowed to bath for four days and were held for more than the stipulated 48 hrs before they were taken to Court. The activists are still being held in custody up to today and even an urgent application by the Lawyers to the high court has been in vain. The ZCTU lawyers are working all out to have the activists released without charges or be taken to court.
