ZCTU Protest Update - 08:00 am
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
November 18, 2003

The ZCTU would like to inform you that two regional leaders were picked up by the Zimbabwe Republic Police during the night and at the moment we are not sure of their whereabouts.

One of these men is Mr. Peter Munyukwi the Central Region Chairperson based in the Midlands City of Gweru. Munyukwi was severely assaulted in the 8th of October protest and is now a target of the Police. He was picked up from his home at 3:15 am but managed to alert some colleageus.

The other leader is Mr. David Shambare the Western Region Vice Chairman who is based in Bulawayo. Shambare was picked up early this morning. He has also received some threats for organising industrial actions at the National Railways of Zimbabwe and at one time was told to vacate his home.

The ZCTU would like to urge all cooperating partners to put pressure on the government and also urge the President to reign in his men (Police) as what they are doing now is unlawful.
