The photograph
reproduced below is of Samuel Khumalo who was severely beaten by
the Zimbabwe Republic Police on 8 October 2003.
 Out
of all those who were arrested, two members from Bulawayo were given
free bail and will appear in court on 23 October 2003. The Activists
were charged under the Miscellaneous Offences Act and made to pay
fines while the ZCTU leadership who refused to pay were released
and told that the case would proceed by way of summons also under
the Miscellaneous Offences Act.
Meanwhile members
of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) tried to gate crash
a ZCTU General Council Collective Bargaining Workshop in Mutare
on 16 October 2003.
The Police spies
wanted to attend the meeting but were denied entrance by the ZCTU
leaders and only left after they had satisfied themselves that the
meeting did not have a political agenda by going through all the
documents produced for the workshop.
The Police are
still continuing to disregard the high court interdict of 2002 which
prevents them from interfering with ZCTU activities.
