Communique on the Fuel Price Increase
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
April 16, 2003

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) General Council, sitting today on the 16th of April 2003 at an urgent General Council meeting resolves that;

The unilateral hiking of fuel prices by government on the 15th of April 2003 is 'illegal' and therefore not acceptable. It is a crime against humanity

Because of the above, it has therefore been unanimously decided that;

  1. The ZCTU's participation at the Tripartite Negotiating Forum has been buried today
  2. The TNF minimum wage figure of Z$46 000 has been overtaken by events and therefore the ZCTU does not recognise it any more
  3. The ZCTU demands that the government immediately reverses the price of fuel. There is no justification for the increase since the TNF was supposed to be meeting on the 24th of April 2003
  4. The government's continued unilateral action has shown that they are negotiating in bad faith and that the TNF is a playground

If the government does not reverse the price of fuel, the ZCTU is undertaking a specified action immediately.
