Condemning
the political violence in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
February 12, 2002
The Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) would like to strongly condemn the
political violence being perpetrated on the people of Zimbabwe which
has engulfed the country at the moment.
It is every
Zimbabwean citizen's right to conduct one's business without fear
of reprisals from other people who do not share the same opinion,
whether it be political, economic or social issues.
It is of great
concern to note that the law enforcement agents are not doing enough
to quell this violence and bring the situation under control, especially
so when the nation is facing an important presidential election.
In cases where the police have acted, it seems the law is applied
selectively. This means that if the situation is not checked, there
will be more violence and harassment of people who deserve to be
protected by the government. The ZCTU calls upon the Police Commissioner,
Augustine Chihuri, to act decisively against these perpetrators
of violence.
In as much as
there has been some statements from political quotas including the
state President himself, denouncing violence, efforts have to be
made to deal with the situation on the ground in order to stop the
escalation of this wanton harassment of the people of Zimbabwe.
The ZCTU would
like to urge organisations responsible to put a stop to these ruthless
attacks, so that democracy prevails and that people, particularly
workers, would be able to go and vote in a free and fair Presidential
election.
To all workers
of Zimbabwe, please do not be lured into violence. We must preach
and observe peace and tolerance. Zimbabwe is our country and let
us not destroy it through violence.
The ZCTU wishes
all the workers peaceful pre- and post election interactions.
