The Zimbabwe government has completed the installation of a fiber optic cable project linking the country to Mozambique as part of efforts to ensure fast and reliable internet connectivity, Information and Communication Technology Minister Nelson Chamisa told state radio Tuesday.

Chamisa told the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation that the installation of the fiber optic cable linking Zimbabwe to an undersea cable at Beira, Mozambique, was completed two weeks ago at a cost of $6.3 million.

"The government has completed the fiber optic cable lining from Harare to Mozambique in a bid to improve connectivity in the country," Chamisa said.

The minister also revealed that a further $15 million would be directed towards the setting up of the cable linking Zimbabwe's southern border town of Beitbridge to an undersea optic cable in South Africa.

The link to the East African undersea cable is expected to improve service provision by the state-run mobile phone operator NetOne and its sister company TelOne, which is Zimbabwe's sole fixed telephone line provider.

Zimbabwe's largest mobile phone operator Econet Wireless is already connected to the undersea cable connecting southern and East Africa to the rest of the world.

This allows faster connectivity for Econet internet users without going through third parties.
