The number of Zimbabweans with access to a telephone has increased from 49 per every 100 people in December to about 58 percent of the population this month, according to latest figures published by the country's telecommunications regulator.

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) said an expanding mobile telecommunications sector was behind the significant increase in Zimbabwe's tele-density during the past few months.

The number of cell phone users in the country has increased by more than 15 percent during the past year, it said.
Zimbabwe's three mobile service providers - Econet Wireless, Telecel Zimbabwe and the state-run Net One - have a combined subscriber base of more than 7.4 million subscribers, up from 6.4 million in 2010. Econet is the largest network, with 4.9 million subscribers, followed by Telecel and Net One weigh in with 1.3 million and 1.2 million, respectively.

Also known as the penetration rate, tele-density measures the availability of telephones in a country expressed as a ratio of the number of phones per every 100 people.
