Transitional Justice Fellowship Programme: Communities In Transition

The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation is pleased to announce the holding of a five-week Transitional Justice in Africa Fellowship Programme-an intensive 5-week residential programme which will be held in Cape Town from 4 October - 7 November 2009 and which is reserved for Zimbabwean nationals presently residing in Zimbabwe. The IJR has been hosting fellows from countries in political transition since 2000.

The programme was designed to attract and bring together scholars and practitioners in the field of transitional justice to compare, reflect and write on the activities they may have been engaged in, in their respective countries. Each programme invites candidates from a specific country within the ambit of the Institute's Africa-based programme, namely Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

A rigorous selection process will ensure the targeting of professionals working with affected communities in the field of transitional justice in Zimbabwe and who are in positions to influence practice and policy. The programmes' purpose is to enhance participants' skills and knowledge, with a particular focus on issues related to community healing within the ambit of transitional justice. Accordingly, the programme will attempt to cover some of the central literature, themes, and mechanisms and will supplement teachings with practical experiences such as a community healing workshop, a trauma healing workshop, engagement with local organisations working in related fields etc.

Through informal classes with local experts, dialogues with practitioners, daily contact with IJR staff, self study and a close relationship with a senior academic mentor, the programme aims to prepare participants for challenges specific to democratic transitions by exposing them to various transitional justice tools. A collaborative environment will foster information exchange and dialogue among participants, IJR staff and IJR partners while self study is encouraged for research purposes. It is hoped that participants will deepen their familiarity with the growing field of transitional justice theory and then apply this theoretical framework to the practical challenges currently facing their country. The programme will also include a strong research component, with one of the outcomes being a research paper of publishable quality. The IJR will cover all travel and accommodation costs for the duration of the fellowship as well as a modest stipend.

Application requirements

To be considered eligible for this fellowship, you should meet the following criteria:

• A post-graduate degree in a discipline related to Transitional Justice
• 4-5 years of relevant work experience
• Good written and spoken English

• The full contact details of 2 contactable references
• A letter of motivation indicating why you wish to participate in this program
• An unedited writing sample of at least 5 pages in length, preferably on a topic broadly related to transitional justice issues
• A two-page proposal outlining a topic of inquiry for the research paper which you aim to write during the fellowship

Food Resources Team Leader - World Vision

• Provide leadership and management support to the Food Resources Team
• Provide programming and systems support for development and relief food programs, including project design, proposal writing, and budgeting.
• Manage the day-to-day implementation of the Food Resource Programs according to the approved objectives and plan of actions

Among various requirements, candidates should have:

• Bachelors degree in Social Sciences, Developmental studies or related field
• Formal training in food programming and related systems is strongly preferred
• 3-5 years' experience in food programming at managerial level
• Experience in region of assignment strongly preferred
• A balance of relief and development experience is highly valued
• Fluency in written and spoken English

The location for this job is Bulawayo.

Picture This: Caring for the Earth
Deadline: 30 September 2009
The photo contest "Picture This: Caring for the Earth" is jointly sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme, the Olympus Corporation and the AFP Foundation. Its aim is to portray the people of Africa as stewards and protectors of their environment. Photos submitted for the contest must illustrate that theme. Special attention will be given to photos that take into account the role that women can and do play in that regard. The top three winners in each category will receive Olympus cameras. The winning photos and photo essays will be displayed on the websites of all three sponsors and shown in at least two exhibitions in Africa and the United States. The first prizewinners will be flown to New York for an awards ceremony. One first prizewinner in the professional category will also be eligible for a fellowship through the AFP Foundation.
