Graça
Machel Scholarship Programme
Deadline: 10 December 2009
The key aim of the Graça Machel Scholarship Programme is
to help provide the female human resources necessary for economic,
social and cultural development in the southern African region and
to develop an educated and skilled workforce that can benefit the
wider community. Scholarships that target women have long been recognized
as an effective approach in addressing gender equality and eradicating
poverty. By providing opportunities to study at postgraduate level,
these scholarships aim to empower women and to equip them to take
up leadership positions in order to have a direct impact in the
communities, nations and region in which they live. Following in
the footsteps of Graça Machel, these female scholars will
be positive role models for other women.
The Graça
Machel Scholarship Programme will provide a minimum of 60 postgraduate
scholarships to female students from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho,
Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and
Zimbabwe in both South Africa and the UK. The majority of the scholarships
will be for study in South Africa.
One of the key
concerns of Mrs Machel is giving a voice to rural women and the
scholarship is therefore aimed at empowering rural women. The Graça
Machel scholarship is for women who have experienced significant
struggle in their life and who have sought to overcome those barriers,
be they related to gender, disability, poverty, age or racial discrimination.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate clearly how their application
fits within this vision of empowerment.

International Fellows Program provides nonprofit sector leadership
training through seminars, applied research and mentorships. The
program is open to young scholars and practitioners interested in
building Third-Sector capacity in their home countries or regions.

project and participate in a seminar with Third-Sector leaders.
The Center determines the program's topics of focus each year.
Fellows will
participate in a 3-month seminar (Monday March 1 to Friday May 28,
2010) on the U.S. and international voluntary sectors. They will
learn about the work of key agencies and meet with foundation leaders
and other nonprofit representatives. They will also attend selected
workshops or conferences.
Fellows are
expected to produce a 25-page research paper on their findings,
which will be presented in the seminar. The research topic for applicants
to the 2010 Emerging Leaders Program is community foundations. A
limited number of fellowships for research on diaspora or corporate
philanthropy may also be available.
Each fellowship
award covers the cost of tuition. As part of the award, the Center
will also provide single-room dormitory accommodations with shared
facilities at International House (adjacent to Columbia University),
economy round-trip air travel to and from New York City and a generous
stipend (taxable) to help cover research-related and additional
living expenses. Tuition-based
appointments may also be made, pending approval by the selection
committee. Tuition information is available upon request.
Please note
that due to a high volume of applications received, research proposals
that address topics other than community foundations, diaspora philanthropy,
and corporate philanthropy will not be considered.

Competition on Smallholder Farmer Innovation
Deadline: 1 November 2009
Farm Radio International is launching a scriptwriting competition
on smallholder farmer innovation in sub-Saharan Africa. The competition
is open to organisations and individuals that work with radio in
Africa, including radio stations, broadcasters, production organisations,
non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with a radio project, farmers'
associations with a radio show, etc.
Competitors
are invited to submit a radio script that tells the true story of
a knowledgeable and inspiring smallholder farmer (or farmers) from
their region who has developed an innovation in one of the following
categories:
- Agricultural
production, harvesting, or storage (including livestock and fisheries);
- Agricultural
processing or food preparation;
- Marketing;
- Cooperation
(collectives, cooperatives, community groups, partnerships, social
networks); and
- Other innovations
related to smallholder farmers and not listed above, for example,
agricultural tools, agroforestry, plant varieties, on-farm production,
or use of renewable energy.
To assist participants
with writing the radio scripts, a free, two-month online scriptwriting
training course will be offered, starting on August 24 2009, through
the competition
website. For those with limited internet access, the course
will be available on a CD-ROM.
Top entries
will be eligible for a variety of prizes, ranging from digital audio
recorders to training opportunities. The winners will be announced
in January 2010. Winning scripts will be published and distributed
to radio stations across sub-Saharan Africa and made available on
Farm Radio International's website. All entrants will receive
feedback on their script.
The script is
to be prepared by talking with local farmers. Scripts can take a
variety of formats - for example, dramas, interviews, or two-host
conversations. The script must be an original piece of work written
specifically for this competition. It must be in English or French,
be between 500-2,000 words, and include references to information
sources used to prepare the script (e.g., farmers, agricultural
institutions, NGOs, documents). Participants are encouraged to include
an audio file with their script; however, this is not a requirement.
These may be in the local language, which, if used for recording,
