Zimbabwe and India will
soon open two Indo-Zim Technology Centres designed to develop the
small and medium enterprises sector following the completion of
the project early this year.
The centres will be built
at a cost of US$3,6 million in Harare and Bulawayo. Addressing guests
at a reception to mark India's Republic Day on Tuesday, India's
Acting Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Vijay Mehta, said the centres
at the Harare and Bulawayo polytechnics would be opened soon.
"The machines are
presently undergoing rigorous testing and the project will be ready
for handover to the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe very
soon," Mr Mehta said.
He said the machines
and equipment and training facilities at the two centres would go
a long way in developing the SMEs, a crucial sector in the country.
"The machines and equipment supplied from India will help in
upgrading SMEs through the introduction of latest manufacturing
technologies which are currently not available in Southern Africa,
except South Africa," he said.
The machines include
mould and die-making, tool design and computer numerically controlled
technology. "The IZTC would also assist Zimbabwe in developing
technically qualified entrepreneurs for setting up small and medium
enterprises," he said.
Mr Mehta said once the
centres are commissioned Zimbabwe would become the regional centre
for high technology in tool and die-making and computer numerically
controlled technology. He said mining, railways and other heavy-duty
industries would also benefit as spares would be manufactured locally.
"The plastic industry
greatly benefits as tools and dies can also be made locally. The
local electronics industry will also benefit through manufacture
of printed circuit boards and training in the printed circuit boards
workshop," he said.
