Update
on international calls from Econet wireless

Herald story about this issue
Due to the unprecedented
increase in out going international calls by our subscribers, the
link connecting all Econet customers with International Operators
has become severely congested. This explains why some of our customers
have been experiencing difficulties in making international calls
in the past few weeks. Econet has therefore NOT barred any of its
customers from making international calls. However, due to the use
of separate international call facilities and the relative numbers
for contract and prepaid subscribers, the Business Partna subscribers
may experience relatively easier access to international calls compared
to the prepaid customers.
Econet will
ensure that capacity for incoming international calls and SMS for
both contract and prepaid customers is maximised and all customers
are encouraged to request the other international party to call
them in Zimbabwe, if outgoing calls are a problem.
Econet is naturally
concerned about the problem facing our customers in making international
calls, but the company is currently unable to overcome these challenges
due to the economy-wide foreign currency shortages. For every international
outgoing call that is made, the network, Econet, incurs a foreign
currency denominated charge. Econet is however making every effort
to resolve these concerns and is engaging with the relevant authorities
to find solutions as part of our ongoing program to strengthen and
expand the network.
Econet undertakes
to keep all our customers informed of any material developments
and appeals for patience and understanding during this period while
we seek solutions under these difficult circumstances.
