ECONET Wireless Holdings Limited has started preparations for installation of its technologically advanced 3G network and expansion of its subscriber base by around 80 percent to 800 000 before end of next year.

Marketing director Mr Darlington Mandivenga told journalists that the bulk of the equipment has already arrived in the country and was being deployed to various sites.

The 3G system would be operational by February 2007.

Econet will become the first mobile telecommunication company to provide such a world class network service in the country, as Zimbabwe will become only the third country in Africa with that service.

Close to 50 000 lines would be released to prospective subscribers and its network coverage would be restricted to major cities initially.

"This is our continued efforts to satisfy different categories of clients despite us being market leaders.

"Econet is no longer looking at competing with local players but rather with regional players.

"We will ensure that we continue preserving our market position even if other regional players such as Vodacom or MTM come on board.

"It might be difficult for us to meet the demand but we will continue doing something to reduce the impact," Mr Mandivenga explained.
