Mtetwa’s
court tribulations resume
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)
October 23,
2013
The trial of
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) board chairperson Beatrice
Mtetwa resumes at Harare Magistrates Court (Rottenrow) on Thursday
24 October 2013 where she is defending herself against charges of
defeating or obstructing justice.
The trial was
adjourned last Friday when the State led by Tawanda Zvekare closed
its case against Mtetwa, who describes the charges as fabricated.
The trial, which
has seen the State leading all its witnesses, was postponed last
Friday to Thursday 23 October 2013 to allow for an inspection-in-loco
at former Prime Minister and MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s
research and communications office located in Harare’s Avondale
suburb, where State prosecutors claimed that she hindered the police
from carrying out their operations.
Mtetwa, who
is represented by Harrison Nkomo was arrested on 17 March 2013 and
charged with contravening Section 184 (1) (g) of the Criminal
Law (Codification and Reform) Act for allegedly defeating or
obstructing the course of justice.
Police accused
her of obstructing the course of justice by allegedly interfering
with a search conducted at one of Tsvangirai’s offices in
Harare. Mtetwa argues that she simply asked to be shown a search
warrant by the police officers to substantiate their actions.
