Police arrest ZimRights director Okay Machisa

The Harare Central
Police have arrested ZimRights Director Okay Machisa on charges
of Conspiracy to commit fraud, forgery and publishing falsehoods,
while ZimRights Secretary Faith Mamutse has signed a warned and
cautioned statement and has been released.
The formal charges
were laid after two members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)
reportedly stormed the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association offices
in Harare and conducted a search of the offices this afternoon.
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) lawyers, Beatrice Mtetwa
and Gift Mtisi witnessed the search.
Earlier this
morning ZimRights Director Okay Machisa together with Secretary
Faith Mamutse handed themselves over to the Harare Central Police
following summons from the Law and Order Section at the Harare Central
Police Station.
In December
2012, police arrested the organisation's Deputy National Programs
Coordinator Leo
Chamahwinya who is currently
in remand at Chikurubi maximum prison under trumped up charges.
The move by
the police is the latest attack on Non-Governmental Organisations
(NGO)'s by the coalition government, which in recent months
has been harassing human rights defenders and NGOs ahead of a constitutional
referendum and planned general elections.
