The MDC led by Professor
Welshman Ncube has decided to continue with the deliberations at
the COPAC 2nd All stakeholders conference after earlier boycotting
the opening session of the event over Professor Arthur Mutambara's
involvement as one of the keynote speakers.
Addressing a
press conference today, Professor Ncube said the involvement of
Professor Mutambara was a clear violation of the SADC
declarations in Maputo that accepted his leadership as one of
the country's principals in the GPA.
"We have since engaged
the SADC facilitation team and they have told us that we will not
be responsible for derailing this constitution making process. However
our delegates will be joining the rest of the colleagues to deliberate
on the draft constitution," Prof Ncube adding that he will
not engage on COPAC business with the two principals of President
Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
COPAC co-chairperson
Douglas Mwonzora said as COPAC they did not want to get involved
in the ongoing leadership dispute between Prof Mutambara and Ncube.
"The Maputo resolutions
of SADC make it very clear who the principals are. As COPAC we had
neither means nor power to stop or remove anyone from attending
the conference," said Mwonzora in response to Prof Ncube's
claims that President Mugabe had threatened to boycott the conference
if Prof Mutambara did not attended.
The delegates to the
conference continued with the discussions on the COPAC draft constitution
in their 18 breakaway chapters and are expected to come up with
resolutions which will be tabled in plenary tomorrow.
The ZPP, which is observing
the conference under the ZZZICOMP banner, has not yet witnessed
any incidents after the principals President Robert Mugabe and Prime
Minister Morgan Tsvangiral urged their supporters to be tolerant
of other people's views and observe peace.
